The Erfocentrum

The Erfocentrum is the Dutch national genetic resource and information centre. It provides information on genetics, pregnancy and perinatal care, medical biotechnology and relevant professionals through various websites, brochures and events. People are also able to contact the Erfocentrum directly for personal queries via e mail and telephone, through the Erfolijn helpdesk.

Mission

Through providing objective, reliable information the Erfocentrum supports people in making informed choices regarding their own health and the health of their children. The Erfocentrum also supports people in forming their own personal opinions about social and ethical aspects of genetics and biomedical issues.

Themes

Information about genetics, pregnancy and perinatal care, and medical biotechnology is often interrelated. The Erfocentrum therefore provides, wherever possible, an integrated approach.

Genetics
The Erfocentrum provides information about genetics in relation to health and society. This concerns information about heredity in general; information about basic, (bio)medical heredity subjects, issues related to reproduction and health and information about genetic and congenital disorders.

Medical biotechnology
The Erfocentrum provides information about the application of biotechnology for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders. The Erfocentrum pays special attention to issues relating to ethics and public opinion as well as prejudices and misconceptions about medical biotechnology.

Pregnancy and perinatal care
The information about pregnancy related topics that is provided by the Erfocentrum historically consists of pre-conceptional information. This includes information about lifestyle, the use of folic acid, awareness of risks, prenatal screening and diagnostics.

Information offer

The Erfocentrum is aimed at providing help and information to the general public as well as specific target groups. This is done through using a variety of mediums including websites, written and audiovisual content, the Erfolijn helpdesk and electronic newsletters.

The Erfocentrum has been involved in strategies to reach specific target groups, courses to enhance professionals’ knowledge, and public campaigns and events to enhance the effectiveness of the information described above.

Finance

The Erfocentrum is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Health and the Dutch Centres for Clinical Genetics.
